Case Study 1:

"Transport for London" researched extensively the strong negative correlation of Physical Activity on Productivity and Absenteeism

Key findings:

  1. evidence from over 90% of relevant studies suggests that workplace exercise intervention programmes can lead to long term increases in physical activity and reductions in absenteeism. The studies also suggest that where physical activity is increased by more than one hour per week, absentee days may be reduced in the long term, with the most successful studies reporting reductions of 33 per cent to 50 per cent.

  2. Evidence from two studies to suggest that physical activity levels affect both short term (up to 12 months) and long term (more than 12 months) health care costs, including people who are obeses and living sedentary lives.

Case Study 2:

Nuffield Proactive Health conducted a 10-month study into a team of 260 employees at Cadbury Trebor Bassett who were working on a global IT project.

An employee health programme, which included banning lunch at desks; changing diet and posture; introducing healthy eating and lunchtime exercise; and health monitoring resulted in 58 per cent of participants increasing their level of exercise, while body fat across the group fell by 5 per cent.

More than half felt less stressed at the end of the programme, around 70 per cent achieved a better work-life balance and a similar number felt more positive about their employer – all scenarios which boost productivity.
